About Me

Hello!

Thank you for taking the time to look around the website; AJM Counseling is a private practice owned and operated by me, Aaron J. Milton. I believe that each individual, couple, and family can attain emotional health, and yet I recognize that not all individuals, couples, or families are capable of doing so on their own. Sometimes a good friend or mentor is able to help you move forward; other times, the help of a therapist is needed.

If you are reading this page, it may be that you or a loved one is experiencing the type of “stuckness” in life that needs the help of a therapist. If that is the case, finding the right therapist is essential. Therefore, I will share some about myself, my therapeutic approach, education, experience, and certifications below. If you have any questions that are not answered, I encourage you to send your questions in an email to Aaron@AJMCounseling.com.

I look forward to hearing from you soon!

General Information

I am a Floridian through and through. I have lived on the east coast of Florida my entire life and enjoy spending time outdoors - camping, hiking, kayaking, and snorkeling. Other interests include movies, board games, and reading. I also enjoy spending time with friends and family, especially my beautiful wife and new baby girl. Those around me would describe me as someone who genuinely cares for others, provides refuge to those who need a safe place, and as someone who creates a warm, welcoming environment.

Therapeutic Approach

I believe in the power of engaging your whole person in the therapeutic process, not just your mind. Examples would include stimulating your senses by having a session on the beach or at a local park, activating your body through movement like walking, biking, kayaking or exercise, and/or integrating your spiritual resources. This allows all of who you are to participate in helping you move forward.

I also believe that therapy is a relational process of healing. This is especially true when “stuckness” is related to negative beliefs formed in relationships and emotional wounds caused by relationships; what is broken relationally is healed relationally. Therefore, I work collaboratively with you to help you move forward. Whether discovering what has contributed to your current “stuckness” from the past or developing creative ways to address your “stuckness” in the present, therapy will help you move forward.

Another, more technical, way to say this is that my approach is client-driven, solution-focused, strength-based, goal-oriented, cognitive-behavioral, and holistic. I utilize interventions from Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), among others.

Education and Experience

I graduated from Palm Beach Atlantic University with a Master of Science in Mental Health Counseling and Marriage, Couple, and Family Counseling and a Master of Divinity in 2018, and I am a Registered Mental Health Counselor Intern in the State of Florida. I have experience working with various Partial Hospitalization and Intensive Outpatient programs for mental health and substance abuse in a wide range of roles including Case Manager, Group Facilitator, and Primary Therapist. The majority of these experiences were in adventure-based programs - utilizing Adventure Therapy, Equine Therapy, and CrossFit. I also have many years of experience in church ministry, leading small groups and providing one-on-one discipleship and pastoral care. Although I am strong in my Christian faith and well educated in Christian Theology, I do not use counseling as a platform to promote or discuss my personal religious beliefs unless requested. I am excited for the next step of working in private practice; combining my experience and education to best serve you.

Certifications

In 2015 I became a Facilitator with Prepare/Enrich, LLC. I also became a Trained Instructor of Couple Communication in 2015. Both of these organizations are focused on helping couples move forward in their relationships. I became an EMDR Therapist in 2017 through the training and supervision of EMDR Consulting, LLC, an EMDRIA (EMDR International Association) approved organization. In 2018 I completed the Psychological First Aid Online course provided by the National Child Traumatic Stress Network.
